The Sunday of the Noble Of Capernaum (10/13)
This Sunday is our annual Mission Festival. Pastor Larry Myers will preach God’s Word and share the work of the Lutheran Heritage Foundation. A door offering will be taken. A potluck luncheon will follow our service. Ham and rolls will be provided. Please bring a side dish or a dessert.
Within the liturgy for each Lord’s day, we receive the Word of God through uniquely appointed readings, psalms, hymns, and prayers. For October and November, we will be using Divine Service Setting Five from Lutheran Service Book when we receive the Lord’s Supper.
This setting is based on Luther’s German Mass (1526), which uses classic Lutheran hymns in place of the canticles. Luther composed or revised Latin hymns for each part of the Ordinary, the pillars of the Divine Service that we ordinarily use every week. These include hymns for the Kyrie Eleison, Gloria in Excelsis, Creed, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei. Listen to these hymns here to prepare for Sunday. The school children will be singing the Kyrie and Sanctus for us as we learn this service.
God Declares Us Righteous Unsheathing His Word Against All Evil
“'Let there be light,' and there was light” (Gen. 1:1—2:3). The Father speaks, and it is so. His Word accomplishes what it says. He created all things out of nothing through His Son by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Father's creative Word became flesh in Jesus Christ, that He might restore fallen creation and save fallen man. To the nobleman whose son was deathly ill, Jesus says, “Go; your son will live” (John 4:46–54). And in the very hour Jesus spoke, the nobleman's son was made well. The Word of Christ still accomplishes what it says. In baptism, absolution, and the Lord's Supper, He declares His life
Collect of the Day: O Lord, keep Your household, the Church, in continual godliness that through Your protection she may be free from all adversities and devoutly given to serve You in good works; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
