John – Chapter 12:9-23
12:9-11 “A great many of the Jews knew that He was there” – The first part of this passage describes the reaction of both the crowd and the leaders to Jesus’ return to Bethany and marks the transition to His entry into Jerusalem. “Many” refer back to 11:55ff who had come for the Passover and were looking for Jesus. Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem is understood in light of the raising of Lazarus. The attention of the “chief priests” was focused on Lazarus, now wanting to even put Him to death. The support of the people grows and is no longer intimidated bu the religious authorities. We can’t help but think of the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (i.e. Lk 16:31). v. 12-13 “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ The King of Israel!” – Now in the second part, the story itself is given in few brush strokes with reference to Zechariah 9:9 (as in Mt. 21). While the context is different than the Synoptics, there are other differences. The preparations are omitted and Jesus Himself finds the “young donkey.” For the Evangelist, little details are needed, two Scripture citations, and a clear transition from Jesus’ earthly self-manifestation as the Messiah. The crowds prepare for Jesus a royal entry. Palm branches were used for victorious and beneficent rulers, brought to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles. Jesus is referred to the “King of Israel” and “your King.” They greet Him as a ruler (Mt 8:34; 25:1; 1 Th 4:17). “Hosanna” is a greeting and blessing. The acclamation that follows is from Ps. 118:25, especially for the pilgrims to greet each other with blessings of salvation as they entered the temple. Now it is used to welcome their Messiah into Jerusalem. v. 14-15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion” – Now Jesus will be king, unlike when the crowds sought to make Him king (c.f. 6:15). Zechariah’s prophecy portrays the humble Prince of Peace as opposed to a violent monarch. He comes with a message of salvation. “Fear not!” is used in Zechariah and elsewhere to address Israel with the promise of salvation as the People of God (Is 35:4; Zeph. 3:16). And His humble kingship will be most evident as He is lifted up on the cross. v. 16-19 “Then they remembered…” – Only after the resurrection (cf. 2:22, 20:9)…
