Bible Study: Ezekiel 35:16-25

Israel’s Exile Profaned Yahweh’s Holy Name (36:17) – Yahweh’s address begins with a reminder of why it had been necessary for Him to expel Israel from its own land and scatter it among the heathen. The reason is summarized as the de lement of the land through the simile of the de lement or uncleanness caused by menstruation (Lev 15:19-33).

An Oracle Against Mount Seir – This should be counted as only half a chapter and should be paired with 36:1-15. The hint is that 36:1-15 doesn’t begin with the Oracle Word-Event formula, “The Word of Yahweh came to me.” Note the contrast between 35:3, “I am against you,” and 36:9, “I am for you.” 36:1-15 is the reverse of 35:1-15 with salvation to “the mountains of Israel” in contrast to Mount Seir (Edom).

The Apostate Remnant in Jerusalem Will Die (33:23-24) — The rest of the chapter consists of two distinct oracles. Each one begins with Yahweh addressing Ezekiel as “son of man.” However, Ezekiel is given to respond to two di erent audiences, the rst, the Israelites left in ruined Jerusalem, and the second, Ezekiel’s fellow exiles.

The Watchman and the Fall of Jerusalem – So far, the bulk of the book has accented God’s judgment on Israel (1-24) and on the heathen nations (25-32). In contrast, the rest of the book (33-48) will usually speak of God’s grace to the new Israel that will consist of regenerate believers endowed with the Spirit under a new David as their Shepherd, Prince, and King (e.g., 34:23-24; 36:25-37; 37:24-25; 39:29).

Like Assyria, the Cedar, Pharaoh Will Descend to Sheol (31:1-9) — Yahweh compares Pharaoh to Assyria under the extensive metaphor of a cedar of Lebanon. The ruler is reckoned the personification of the people under him, hence comparing an individual to a nation.

Egypt Will Fall By The Sword – The Announcement of the Day of Yahweh on Egypt (30:1-5) Content-wise, chapter 30 contains relatively little di erence from chapter 29. Again, there are two oracles, the former with four sections and the latter as an appendix-like summary.

Bible Study: Ezekiel 29

Oracles against Egypt (29—32) – From Genesis to Revelation, the number symbolizes completeness. Egypt is the seventh and last country to be addressed by Ezekiel’s oracles against the nations (25—32), and seven separate oracles are addressed against it.
